According to Senator Edgardo Angara on his press statement, “Two cyclones hitting two different parts of the globe over the same weekend is a clear example of how a changing climate is a growing international challenge,”
The storms that hit Philippines and the United States over the weekend underscore the need for cooperation against the effects of climate change. Added the Senator.
Super-Typhoon Mina with international name Nanmadol, left Philippines with 22 dead and caused around P1 billion in damage to crops and infrastructure. Over 1,215 families were brought to evacuation centers.
PAGASA expect 3 or more typhoons to visit Philippine Area of Responsibility for this month of September.
Meanwhile, Hurricane “Irene,” in US killed at least 21 and caused flight cancellations by the thousands. Wind damage alone may cost more than $1 billion.

Per Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Tropical Storm “Mina” like Typhoon Dodong is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and will bring scattered to widespread rains over Southern Luzon and Visayas particularly over the western section.
Estimated rainfall amount is from 15-25 mm per hour within the 500 km diameter of the tropical storm.
Elvie Enriquez a PAGASA forecaster said that they could not immediately give an estimate on how long Tropical Storm Mina will remain in Philippine area of responsibility. TS Mina is said to be interacting with another cyclone outside the Philippine area of responsibility. While this second cyclone is not likely to enter the Philippines area of responsibly, it is somehow slowing the exit of “Mina” from the Philippine which will result to more monsoon rain over parts of the country.
